Adult strabismus is a condition in which the eyes do not align properly and may point in different directions. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. The misalignment may be constant or occur only at certain times.
Strabismus can begin during childhood and continue, return, or become more noticeable in adulthood. It may also develop later because of thyroid eye disease, diabetes, stroke, trauma, or certain neurological and muscle conditions. In some cases, it can occur following cataract, retinal, glaucoma, or other eye surgery.
Adults with strabismus may experience:
These symptoms can affect everyday activities, confidence, social interactions, and quality of life. Adult strabismus is more than a cosmetic concern, and treatment can provide meaningful functional and personal benefits.
Treatment is available at any age and depends on the type, cause, and severity of the eye misalignment. Options may include prism glasses, eye exercises for certain conditions, botulinum toxin injections, or eye muscle surgery. Strabismus surgery is typically an outpatient procedure that adjusts the position or tension of the eye muscles to improve alignment. In some cases, adjustable sutures may be used to fine-tune the results after surgery.
